(L to R) Congressman Phil Gingrey, Kent Buchanan, Sam Buchanan and Commissioner of Agriculture Candidate Gary Black converse during NG Turf and Sports Turf’s 21st Annual Customer Appreciation Day and Dove Shoot on September 2, 2006. Over 300 guests enjoyed Huckleberry’s Barbeque and Bruester’s ice cream on a perfect summer day in Whitesburg, Georgia. This annual opportunity provides a relaxing, extended opportunity to get reacquainted with customers and friends as well as sharing opening day for dove season. We celebrated our 6th annual event at the Clarksville farm on the same day. The tradition continued in Calhoun on September 9th which was the 1st Annual event at our newest location.
A special thank you to all our customers, vendors, and friends for their support and attendance. See you all in 2007.
Army Worms
WHEN & WHAT TO LOOK FOR: Normally mid to late July is when you start seeing army worms. They can be found until the first frost; drought years are worse than others. Your first sign of a fall armyworm infestation might be several birds clustered on a turf area. Young worms are ½ to ¾ inch long. Mature ones are 1½ inches long. They are dark colored and have several light stripes down the length of the body. The head or “face” has an inverted “Y” on it.
LIFE CYCLE: The armyworm caterpillars hatch from eggs in 3-10 days, depending upon temperature. Once mature, they burrow into the soil and 14 days later emerge as moths. There can be as many as 4 generations of fall armyworms present in one year.
Fall armyworms are attracted to lush, green, well fertilized turfgrass, i.e. fresh sod. The worms rarely kill grass but some plots may be severely weakened and drought conditions do not help.
WHAT TO DO: If you suspect fall armyworms but cannot find the caterpillars on the grass, use a soap flush to bring them to the surface. A soap flush consists of 2 tablespoons of liquid dish detergent mixed in 2 gallons of water. Slowly pour from a bucket or sprinkling can the whole contents onto approximately a 3’ x 3’ area and watch carefully over the next few minutes for the armyworms to come to the top of the turfgrass.
Sevin, Dursban, Orthene or Conserve are effective insecticide treatments. Please be sure to read the label carefully and follow the directions.
Water before treating, to move the caterpillars out of the thatch. Treat in late afternoon, when the caterpillars are likely to begin feeding. If possible, mow before you treat and then do not mow for three days after treatment.
